What essential oils are good for inducing labor?
Clary sage oil is a natural uterotonic, meaning it can cause contractions of the uterus. Therefore, it is understood to be a natural method to improve the effectiveness of contractions in labour. Aromatherapy is one of the CAMs used to stimulate labor. It is usually applied in a footbath, via scent inhalation, or by massage using clary sage, lavender, or jasmine oil [5,6,7,8,9,10].
What kind of oil induces labor?
Castor oil has been used to induce and accelerate childbirth since ancient Egypt. The precise mechanism of its action at the onset of childbirth is not known but is probably due to increased production of prostaglandins [16, 17]. As your baby matures and signals that it’s ready for life outside the womb, your body begins to respond. Hormones like prostaglandins help soften and thin the cervix, while oxytocin triggers the contractions that eventually lead to labour. For example, sexual activity, especially having an orgasm, can release oxytocin, which may help jumpstart uterine contractions. Also, for pregnant people who have sex with people with penises, there are prostaglandin hormones in semen that might help ripen the cervix. There are four different ways that labour is induced: prostaglandin • a balloon catheter • artificially breaking the waters • oxytocin. Most women need a mixture of these before they have their baby.
