Most species are known by the common name willowherbs for their willow-like leaves. The plant is well-known to soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation & help it calm down. This anti-inflammatory property can be attributed to various bioactive compounds which are abundant in willowherb.It is, however, a good idea to control the spread of willowherb to stop it becoming too abundant in parts of the garden where it might smother and outcompete smaller or less vigorous plants.
What is Epilobium montanum used for?
Epilobium montanum herb has been used in the traditional Austrian medicine internally as tea for treatment of disorders of the prostate, kidneys, and urinary tract. A review of studies of the use of extracts from Epolobium species indicated that there was some evidence for traditional uses with digestive disorders. Willow herb is antispasmodic, astringent, demulcent, emollient, laxative and a tonic. A tea made from the leaves and roots is a folk remedy for gastro-intestinal and bronchial complaints. In Germany and Austria the plant is used to treat prostate problems.
