Is male fern root safe? The rhizome of Dryopteris filix-mas (male fern) was formerly used as an antihelminthic drug [5], but it is highly toxic and has been superseded by other less-dangerous agents. Historically, the male fern was used in phytotherapy as a vermifuge. However, its rhizome is toxic, and medicinal use is now discouraged.
