Is kinnikinnick a drug?
Kinnikinnick Smoke Blend: Kinnikinnick is a mixture of herbs that is traditionally used in Pipe Ceremonies and Smudging. There are many many different mixtures of herbs that have been used over the years across Turtle Island. Our mixture includes Bear Root, Bear Berry Leaf, Mullein, Red Osier Dogwood. The use of Red Bearberry in these mixtures is due to its traditional medicinal and ceremonial significance among Indigenous peoples. It is often included in kinnikinnick blends for its aromatic properties and mild psychoactive effects when smoked.Kinnikinnick is extremely cold hardy and the berries last a long time on the plant, providing a valuable food source for birds and other animals. Although they are edible, they do not have much value for human consumption and are best left on the plant.
Is bearberry an endangered plant?
Range & Habitat: The native Bearberry occurs primarily in northern Illinois, where it is rare and state-listed as ‘endangered’ (see Distribution Map). However, some large healthy populations of this low shrub can be found along the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. Bearberry usually grows in poor, acidic, dry, sandy soils. It’s most common in open, sunny areas, but can also be found in lightly shaded understories. This shrub is native to North America, Europe, and Asia. A circumboreal species, it occurs across northern regions where temperatures are cold.Although not to be confused with each other, barberry and bearberry are both shrubs that produce berries and have been used medicinally for centuries. Many people like to use Japanese barberry in landscapes because it has attractive orange-red fall foliage and red fruit.
